Hi,My names emma and Im new here(maybe as you can tell).Im planning to go away to either Nepal(India) or Ghana(well almost I need to do the over the phone interview first) but I was just wondering how everyone raised the money? I mena its £2000 near enough and I was thinking of a boot sale but has anyone else got any ideas?Also how did you feel going away on you're own for 3 months and if anyone has been how was it I mean a good experiance how did it feel to be away for sooo long?
Im looking forward to it I just need to pass the phone interview but hopefully it should be ok because I really wanna go and do this and make a change for everyone and all the people in need.

Good luck with raising the money. Your local library will have a copy of a big book called the Directory of Grant Making Trusts, it has lists of charitable trusts that give away money for people to do things like teaching in Ghana, etc, I'm told the average donation from these trusts is about £200. Also, take a look at the Money section on http://www.gapyear.com, its got some great ideas for fundraising

| I raised alot of money through a sponsered hair cut which is taking place next week...around £700-800. Obviously this may not be the best thing for a lass to do...however theres so much stuff you can do. I had only got 2 months or so to plan a fundraising thing but if you've got plenty of time have a good look into things. One thing I did was write to around 50 compnaies all of which make suncreams, mozi repellants, maleria tablets etc. explaining about it being a good cause etc. I've got about £70 worth of products given to me, which doesn't seem alot when the project costs about £2400 but it really has helped me.

Hiya, I'm Sophie  I'm going to India 2008 and i cannot wait! Uber excited! How's everyone else getting on raising money? I'm currently racking my brains for simple fund raising ideas as, like a lot of you, I'm in the middle of my A levels and have soooooo much work! Any ideas? Or does anyone have any idea who would have some ideas?! I'm not too sure about shaving my head (long hair) ... although it would be easier in India ...

So far people have come up with a sponsored sky dive (but it's a bit expensive), a sponsored bike ride, a cake sale and the main one, I think, is getting a part time/ full time job.
What month are you going out to India?

Hey, yeah well i have a job! Wanted to get more people involved and raise awareness for this kinda thing thats going on, cake sale sounds quite fun!

Yeah, same India Jan 2008, on the medical placement tho. The other ppl goin in Jan 08 are in the India forum 'Jan 2008'.
I guess getting people involved is a pretty good idea, rather than a job that you just do solitary, and its a good way to meet new ppl and stuff like that, but I'd find it hard to come up with the full balance just by fundraising.
What placement are u going for?

if you are in the slightest bit crafty try a craft sale . otherwise boot sales theres goota be some junk you dont need anymore. one of my friends is doing a fundraising ball at a church hall which i recon could get you quite a bit. ive got quite a bit by just doing odd jobs like babysitting and taking kids home from school adn stuffs.

Hey,
an idea for fundraising, i wrote to loads of companies (over 20), like supermarkets etc. some have charity departments, otherwise i just sent them to the main office, get the addresses of the internet.
that was about 2months ago, and to be honist i had kind of given up hope, after havin about 10 replies saying no and nothing from the rest. however... i got a letter last week from wilkinsons inviting me to a cheque giving presentation! but im on a course, so cant go! but i rang them and they said theyd still sponsor me £1000!!
So.. id recomened that, but be patiant
i also raised £100 from a cake sale and im doin a bike ride in may, so it all counts

hey everyone,
im going to india in september of this year!
i did a st patricks night fundraiser, and i got a live ceili band (irish music), refreshments, a quiz, a raffle, irish dancing display from a local group and then a chance for everyone else to dance to the live music. i raised over £400, and although it took effort to organise, was definatley worth it.
for the raffle prizes, i wrote and emailed a lot of local businesses and got theatre tickets, a hairdressers vouchers, football tickets (ipswich V derby county), jewellry, and loads of alcohol!
so even though st patricks has passed, maybe you could do a barn dance (suitable for any time of the year!)
get all your mates and family members to help out, i would definatley recommend it i had such a good time doing it!

| Hi, I'm going to Kenya in September, and I put on a show with my dance school to help raise some money for it. A local performing arts school let me use their stage and hall for free, and I rounded up people I know to come and perform. I borrowed a friend's card for a wholesale shop and bought drinks and sweets to sell, and bought raffle prizes from the pound shop! The show was fantastic, but I'd been so busy with A levels and a trip to Canada that I hadn't managed to promote it very well, so the audience was pretty small. I still managed to raise £300, but my advice would be to put all your efforts into advertising whatever events you do. If, like me, you don't like asking for sponsor money, it's best to think of things where people get something in return, so entertainment or a product you can sell (like cakes) works well. Also, don't rely on people to turn up just because they said they will. Do something where you can sell tickets, and make sure people buy them in advance. Hope this helps!

Hiya!
Its worth checking to see if your local council has any grants which are given to those undertaking a gap year - I asked and found that kent county council are among several who give yearly grants! I had to go through an interview and do a presentation...it was a bit nerve racking but at the end of the process they gave me £1500 on the basis that I did a small presentation of my time away when I came back!
Its definetly worth trying to get your local council to help out in any way - even if they put you into contact with a cheap vaccinations clinic (which mine also did!) or give you some travel advice, It might still save you money!
