Is there anything you think you will absolutely
need
whilst you are out on your placement?
Is there anything you will find hard leaving behind (family/friends aside)?
Is there anyone who has been on the placement, and if so, can they tell us what the thing they found the missed the most?

Hi Brad
Can you be more specific? Which placement?

I'm not being placement specific. Any placement, anywhere in the world, at any time. You're probably going to miss the same things in India as you are in the Honduras!

Hi Brad
See what you mean. I suggest you contact a past volunteer to India, Lea, as she can give you first-hand advice. Her email address is: loux86@hotmail.com
Nothing like hearing it from the horse's mouth!
Have a great Xmas. All the best - Jo

Just incase Lea hasn't got back to you - she's a tad scatty (I was in India with her)! In my opinion there are only 2 essentials. Duct Tape and re-sealable bags. If you can't fix it with that then it cannot be fixed.
Do not take loads of clothes. The ones you buy there are much better and cheaper.
Don't take loads of toiletries, again they are cheaper there, and YES despite popular belief you can buy anti-mosquito stuff there. What you can't buy are tampons - i realise you are a boy and this won't effect you, but let any girls you are going with know.
Take flip flops, one of the thin super absorbant felt like towels, a DIARY - important for your mind. Thats about it really. MP3 player. LOADS of stuff for the kids!!!
Good Luck! Charlotte

Hi Charlotte, thanks very much for that!
I was definitely thinking of keeping a diary, abd I was thinking of taking a videocamera for a video diary. Do you think this is a sensible idea?
I'm not quite sure how I'll drop the tampon fact into conversation but I'll bear it in mind.

| A video diary is a good idea depending on what your placement is like. At ours we didnt really have time alone, you were either in the room with the kids or the room with the other volunteers, but I'm sure that was different in other places. We all had digital cameras with video facility anyway - video's of the kids are great, so definately take it if you've got it, but don't count on the privacy to use it for a diary!
